NetSuite vs Sage Intacct

These two reach the final round together more often than any other pair in the mid-market, and the choice is nearly always the same trade: NetSuite is broader, Intacct is better at accounting. Which of those you need is usually knowable before the demos start.

NetSuite is the better choice if

  • You need more than finance. Inventory, warehouse, manufacturing, ecommerce, and CRM in one system. Intacct does not attempt this and integrates instead.
  • You operate globally. Statutory compliance across many jurisdictions, 190+ currencies, and local tax handling represent two decades of work.
  • You are above roughly $200M. The breadth and the ecosystem start to matter more than the accounting elegance at that scale.
  • You want one vendor for everything. A defensible preference, and NetSuite is the only mid-market product that genuinely offers it.

Sage Intacct is the better choice if

  • Accounting quality is the priority. The dimensional model is better, the close is faster, and the reporting is stronger. If finance is the buyer, Intacct usually wins on merit.
  • You are a nonprofit. Fund accounting, grant tracking, and nonprofit reporting are best in class and NetSuite does not match them.
  • You are a service business. NetSuite’s breadth is in areas a consultancy or software company never opens, and it is cost you still pay.
  • You want a shorter implementation. Three to six months against six to twelve, with correspondingly lower risk and cost.
Both quotes need the same treatment

Neither publishes pricing, both negotiate heavily at quarter end, and in both cases the implementation quote matters more than the licence. Ask each partner what their average variance to original quote was last year. The number, or the reluctance to give one, tells you more than the proposal does.

The verdict

If you need operational breadth — inventory, manufacturing, warehouse, global statutory — NetSuite, without much hesitation. Intacct does not compete in those areas and integrating specialists for all of them recreates the complexity you were trying to remove.

If you are a service business or a nonprofit and finance is the primary requirement, Intacct, comfortably. Better dimensions, faster close, shorter implementation, and lower total cost. The breadth you would be paying for in NetSuite is breadth you would not use.

The failure mode to avoid is buying NetSuite for breadth you might need one day. Optionality in ERP is expensive, and the modules bought speculatively are usually still unopened three years later.

Questions

Common follow-ups.

Do you sell either of these?
No. We sell a competing product and take no referral fees from either, which is why we can score them without a stake in the outcome.
Which is more expensive?
NetSuite, usually, on both licence and implementation. The gap widens with entity and module count.
Which implementation is riskier?
NetSuite, mostly because it is longer and broader. Six to twelve months against three to six, and scope has more room to move.
Can Intacct handle inventory?
Lightly, and it integrates with specialists rather than competing. If inventory is central, that is an argument for NetSuite.
How current is this?
Reviewed quarterly and dated. Both ship continuously; corrections are welcome and we note them.
